In 1979, I was 15 years old fledgling guitarist in Dallas Texas, and I first heard about Billy Gibbons using a Mexican Peso as a guitar pick! I was intrigued and the next year when I started my apprenticeship to be a jeweler, I decided to play around and see if I could make a guitar pick out of a US Quarter by hammering and rolling out one end, to have similar small ridges on the pick edge. I succeeded and have created custom made picks ever since with a plethora of different coins from all over the world. Different coins, depending on the alloys of metal they are made from have unique sonic fingerprints. Different edges of the coins allow for increased pinch harmonics and for sliding down the strings, tapping or any other effect – there is no deformation or destruction of the pick, where other traditional picks get ridged or deformed or wear down. A coin pick can last a lifetime.
