Coin picks allow for different alloy metals to come in contact with the instrument strings. It increases the attack and sound of the instrument compared to regular picks of plastic, bone, nut or other materials. Different coins original thickness and diameter as well as the edge profile (whether it is smooth or ridged) can greatly change the sound.
Using coin picks can open up a sonic pallet not otherwise obtainable. This is why many of the world’s greatest guitar players use them live and in the recording studio.
